Since the 2016 assessment of the effectiveness of the United States' measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, the country reported back to the FATF in 2020 on the actions it had taken to strengthen its AML/CFT framework.  As a result, and to reflect this progress, the FATF rerated the United States on Recommendation 10 (Customer Due Diligence).  

The United States is compliant on 9 of the 40 Recommendations and largely compliant on 22 of them. It remains partially compliant on 5 of the 40 Recommendations and not compliant on 4 of them. The United States remains in enhanced follow-up and will report back to the FATF on progress to strengthen its implementation of measures to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Since its mutual evaluation in 2016, the United States has worked to improve the effectiveness of its national framework to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

In 2016, the FATF and APG assessed the effectiveness of the United States' measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, and their compliance with FATF Recommendation.  The report concluded that the United States has a well-developed and robust anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) regime through which it is effectively investigating and prosecuting money laundering and terrorist financing. However, the assessment also identifed serious gaps in the system that impede timely access to beneficial ownership information

Following this mutual evaluation, the United States reported back regularly about its progress in addressing the techical compliance deficiencies.  However, this follow-up process does not focus on effectiveness. The effectiveness of the United States' actions to combat money laundering and terrorist financing will be assessed in the 5th round of mutual evaluations.
