Objectives for the FATF during the United Kingdom Presidency (2026 - 2028)

Giles Thomson of the United Kingdom assumes the Presidency of the FATF from July 2026 to June 2028 and is committed to strengthening the FATF’s efforts to tackle the financial flows that fuel crime, terrorism and proliferation, and to support safer, more resilient and more inclusive economies.

Under the United Kingdom Presidency, the FATF’s work on standards, implementation and engagement with stakeholders will be guided by the principles of effectiveness, real-world impact, prioritisation and collaboration across the Global Network.

The Presidency will lead the FATF to support the delivery of the Strategic Priorities for 2026-2028 as agreed by the FATF Ministers in April 2026, with a core focus on the successful delivery of the new round of mutual evaluations and follow-up procedures that drive practical reforms in assessed countries.

The Presidency will prioritise the following work:

  • Deliver a step change in the FATF’s response to fraud by examining illicit financial flows linked to scam compounds, strengthening coordination with the private sector, the FATF-style Regional Bodies and international partners, and demonstrating how the FATF toolkit applies to fraud and where it could be used more effectively to enhance countries’ responses.
  • Promote more effective implementation of the risk-based approach and risk-based supervision, so that authorities, supervisors and private-sector actors target resources to the areas of greatest risk and reduce activity where risks are lower.
  • Explore developments in the generation and use of financial intelligence, including how the FATF can support countries and the private sector to focus on high-value reporting and better use of actionable information.
  • Enhance public-private, cross-border and private-to-private information sharing, consistent with fundamental rights, safeguards and data protection rules, to support the disruption of illicit finance and recovery of funds.
  • Support effective implementation of recently revised FATF Standards, including those on virtual assets and cross-border payments, working with relevant international organisations such as the G20 and Financial Stability Board (FSB).
  • Strengthen cohesion across the Global Network by raising the voice of FATF-style Regional Bodies, supporting tailored assessment of low-capacity jurisdictions, and embedding Global Network perspectives across the FATF’s work.
  • Build on previous Presidencies’ work to enhance stakeholder engagement and diversity and inclusion.

The Presidency looks forward to enhancing the FATF’s engagement with stakeholders, and to working collaboratively with all members, associate members, FATF-style Regional Bodies and partners. It will also seek to use the United Kingdom’s concurrent leadership of the G20, G7 and FSB to bolster political support for the FATF’s objectives.

The United Kingdom Presidency will seek to deliver a focused, practical and outcomes-oriented agenda that reflects the diverse perspectives and realities across the Global Network.

The FATF Global Network endorsed and welcomed these priorities at the June 2026 Plenary.
